Tell me a little about yourself and your art?

I paint modern contemporary portraits which are colourful, fun and graphic. I mainly work on my own projects and choose celebrity figures and iconic people from history as my subjects. I also do commissions when the project is interesting to me and will challenge my creativity.

How did you first get into your chosen art?

I’m a lockdown artists. I always assumed art was for those who were talented at drawing and therefore never gave it a go. I was watching Grayson Perry’s Art Club and saw Joe Lycetts art and thought it looked fun, he had a good attitude towards things. I got myself some paints and haven’t stopped since.

Where do you feel the inspiration to create your art comes from?

My inspiration comes from the films and TV shows I watch for my subjects, I get so engrossed that they become part of my life so painting them helps me let them go. Creatively I love pop art, the usual suspects such as Warhol and Litchenstein, but find others like Rothko really interesting and brave. I’m new to art, as a designer I’ve always shunned it, but discovering artists is such a pleasure now.

The last year has been especially challenging for so many of us. How have you managed, both personally and creatively?

I’ve done OK. I’m an app designer by trade so my work hasn’t stopped and my art has been a great creative release. It’s a great feeling to be creative but not on the clock. I’ve turned to art when I’ve been low or bored or even just needing inspiration. I’m lucky I’ve picked up some great art friends on Instagram and we all keep each other motivated.

Has the pandemic or lockdown had any influence on your work, either positively or negatively?

I wouldn’t be painting if the pandemic didn’t happen, honest. I would still be that judgy designer that didn’t respect art. Thankfully I’m not him anymore and have huge respect for all artists.

What plans do you have for your art going forward?

I’d like to venture into the work of exhibition space, it’s scary but feel it’s something I need to do. Get my work out there, I’ve had some good opportunities but still hiding my art away to only a few places online. I need to be brave and show the world, or at least Shrewsbury!

What practical advice would you give someone wanting to to take up your form of art professionally?

I’m still an amateur but I’d say stop thinking about it and do it. Pick up a brush and see what happens.

Where can people see your art?

You can find me on Instagram @portmates, Facebook /portmates and on my online store https://portmates.co.uk
