Describe who you are and what you do.

My name is Sam Pooley-Stride, I am an abstract painter and mixed media artist.

How and where do you work to create your art?

I am currently artist in residence at Studio 39 in Shrewsbury.

Who do you most admire artistically?

Robert Ryman, Albert Oehlen, Franz Kilne, Tracey Emin, Gerhart Ritcher, Geourgeoise.

Describe a situation that inspired you.

One real life situation that inspired me was seeing my first ever Rothko painting at the Tate Liverpool and wanting to literally dive in, a complete magnetic attraction to a painting and nothing else in the room existed.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

When I created boobwallpaper. It wasn't about the boobs, it was about the 260 women who braved the experience, very scared at first, then elated when they had done it. They all love and talk to me about it even now.

Name something you love, and why.

I love silence and my own company because I rarely get it with a young family. I love calm and crave it, because I attract and am chaos. I very rarely paint with musician, most of the time I think I will find that I have spent an entire day with no sound in my studio.

What is your dream project?

A canvas as big as a T-Rex, scaffolding and a van full of new paint in an enormous white space in the Flax Mill where I can lose myself.

Favourite or most inspirational space?

Cornwall and the Highlands of Scotland. Both my favourite places, unable to choose, I go to them at least once a year always return burning to create.

What's the best piece of advice you've been given?

Be a nice human. It's a no brainer really.
